With immense gratitude and affection, we remember our founder, the late Mr. Pritish Nandy – poet, painter, journalist and editor, television host, parliamentarian, animal rights champion and visionary filmmaker who changed the face of Indian media many times over. Before he built Pritish Nandy Communications, he reshaped magazine journalism in India as the Publishing Director of The Times of India Group between 1982 and 1991, and also served as Editor for The Illustrated Weekly of India, The Independent, and Filmfare. He later, through Indian television’s first signature show, The Pritish Nandy Show on Doordarshan, brought, impactful and brutally candid conversations with political, cultural and artistic changemakers into living rooms across the country. A prolific poet, he was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1977 for his contribution to literature. He also served in the Rajya Sabha from 1998 to 2004 and cofounded People for Animals, India’s first animal rights NGO.
He founded Pritish Nandy Communications in 1993 with a modest paidup capital of ₹40,000 and a radical idea: that a tiny creative hot shop in South Bombay could tell audacious, contemporary stories while embodying corporate transparency and creative freedom. Under his leadership, PNC became one of the first Indian media and entertainment companies to list on the BSE and NSE in 2000, pioneering the corporatisation of the Indian film industry and setting new standards for professionalism across the industry. From acclaimed films such as Kaante, Jhankaar Beats, Chameli, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Shabd and Pyaar Ke Side Effects to pathbreaking streaming shows like the International Emmy nominated Four More Shots Please!, Modern Love Mumbai and The Royals, he helped define a new, urbane, emotionally resonant language for Indian cinema and global streaming content.
Recipient of the EM Forster Literary Award, the UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Award, the International Humanitarian Award from the Humane Society of the United States and the Friends of Liberation War Honour from Bangladesh, Pritish Nandy brought rare international recognition to Indian storytelling. At PNC, his belief in fearless ideas, craft excellence and empathy continues to guide every story we tell. The brand he painstakingly shaped from its very first day remains his living legacy - carried forward in our culture, our people and the audiences we move, inspire and entertain, year after year.
